19August 2020

SEATTLE–( BUSINESS WIRE)– As people everywhere are investing more time at home, a new survey from PEMCO Mutual Insurance coverage reveals that Seattle-area residents

enjoy their neighbors more than they used to– but that still doesn’t imply they want to be welcomed over to check out. As part of the most recent PEMCO Insurance coverage Northwest Survey, the Seattle-based insurance company asked Seattle and Portland locals to rate the qualities of excellent next-door neighbors, along with the characteristics of a bad next-door neighbor, and likewise asked to categorize their own neighbors. The outcomes are reported as an index– PEMCO’s” Great Neighbor Index “– where a greater rating, out of a possible 100 points, suggests the presence of more great neighbors than bad ones.

PEMCO last released the index in 2015, and while there were no modifications to how Portland-area homeowners feel about their neighbors, Seattleites are considerably most likely in 2020 to state they have more excellent neighbors than bad ones, with an index rating of 40. In 2015, Seattle’s Great Next-door neighbor Index score was just 27.

In 2020, 88% of Seattle-area citizens state they have more excellent neighbors than bad, compared to just 69% of homeowners who stated the very same in 2015. On the other hand in Portland, responses remained consistent between 2015 and 2020, with about 75% reporting they have more terrific next-door neighbors, scoring 38 on the index in 2020 and 35 in 2015.

“It’s encouraging to see a lot of Northwesterners embracing individuals who live in our neighborhoods,” said PEMCO Insurance coverage Spokesperson Derek Wing. “But true to Seattle kind, our survey discovered that locals here do not believe that being an excellent neighbor always suggests hanging out mingling or hosting a dinner.”

When it happens a terrific next-door neighbor, the majority of respondents said that respecting others’ rights and being reasonable is the most essential neighborly quality, together with being credible and watching out for your place if you’re away.

Remarkably, taking interest in your family and extending invites for sees were some of the lowest-rated qualities of being a great next-door neighbor– only about 5% of Seattle respondents stated these attributes were crucial. Those qualities are even less important to Portland residents.

On the other hand, most Seattle and Portland citizens concur that bad next-door neighbors are those who often host loud celebrations with multiple visitors, those who are not trustworthy, and those who do not respect the rights of others. Almost half of participants also cited noisy or roaming family pets and poorly preserved home as signs of a bad neighbor.

The poll likewise discovered another fascinating takeaway: people seem to enjoy their neighbors more, even as they are engaging with them less due to the COVID-19 pandemic. About 4 out of 5 homeowners in Seattle and Portland state they’re engaging with their next-door neighbors about the exact same or even less because the pandemic started, mainly due to the fact that of the value of social distancing.

Furthermore, about one-third of participants said that the most essential quality of a good next-door neighbor is one who does an excellent task following public health standards like wearing a mask and practicing social distancing.

“We’re grateful to see that individuals here are taking our cumulative duty seriously when it pertains to keeping each other safe,” Wing said. “It reveals that there are lots of methods we can all be fantastic neighbors and support our neighborhood in challenging times and beyond.”
