Seattle Sounders FC’s charitable arm, RAVE Foundation, and the Seattle Storm have accompanied Symetra Life Insurance Coverage Business to support and improve equitable access to physical activity for youth by renovating an under-utilized court surface area at Midway Park in Des Moines into a brand-new small pitch and basketball court.

The multi-purpose entertainment area is a donation to the neighborhood from RAVE Foundation and the Storm, with generous support from Symetra Life Insurance Coverage Company. Together, the trio is collaborating to purchase this new court meant for free play, meaning that the courts are unrentable by groups or groups, ensuring they stay open at all times for the neighborhoods they serve. Positioned simply east of Pac Highway in a green space desert, Midway Park offers an essential safe location to play for close-by youth. The new double soccer and basketball court will be complimentary to all who visit and serves to inspire play and neighborhood pride. More details can be found at RaveFoundation.org/ Midway.

“RAVE and Sounders FC continue to support marginalized neighborhoods by investing in new, safe locations to play and programs that support healthy activity,” said RAVE Foundation Executive Director Ashley Fosberg. “We’re enjoyed partner with the Seattle Storm to further play equity in our region with this multi-sport court and we’re anticipating celebrating with the Midway neighborhood when the time is safe and best.”

“The Storm is dedicated to empowering youth to develop life-long wellness habits, and the primary step to doing so is to remove barriers to play,” said Nate Silverman, Storm Sr. Vice President, Corporate Collaborations & & Social Duty. “By partnering with Symetra, RAVE and Sounders FC to remodel Midway Park, we are offering a place for the community to come together and bet years to come.”

Sounders FC and the Storm are members of the King County Play Equity Union, which is aimed at bringing access to sports and entertainment despite zip code, language or race. The King County Play Equity Union was formed in direct response to results of a 2019 research study by the University of Washington’s Center for Leadership in Sports, in collaboration with King County Parks and The Aspen Institute, which found that less than 19 percent of young people in the region get the amount of exercise suggested by the Centers for Illness Control and Prevention. The Coalition is devoted to execute the report’s recommendations to remove barriers to physical activity for more kids throughout King County.

In preparation for the restoration, students at Midway Elementary had the chance to contribute to the style of the new court’s soccer objectives and basketball backboards as part of a virtual Goals & Hoops For Art occasion. Sounders FC Brand name Ambassador and former gamer Brad Evans and Seattle Storm Partner Head Coach Noelle Quinn signed up with trainees as they put imaginations to paper in the art event, led by Midway Elementary Principal Debbie Ellis and Highline Public Schools instructor Marianne Schneeman. The art work from trainees will be used to add intense and individual touches on Midway Park’s objectives and hoop structures at the new court.
